How to Measure Furniture and Delivery Access in the UAE

Buying used furniture online can be a smart way to furnish a UAE home, but a piece that fits the room may still fail to fit through the building. Before requesting a sofa, bed, wardrobe or dining set, measure both the final position and the complete delivery route.

This guide gives you a practical checklist for measuring furniture and access in an apartment or villa. Keep every measurement in centimetres, take photos of tight turns, and leave a small safety margin rather than relying on an exact fit.

1. Measure the space where the furniture will go

Start with the usable area—not the room’s wall-to-wall dimensions. Note skirting boards, columns, windows, balcony doors, air-conditioning vents, electrical outlets and any doors that swing into the space.

  • Width: Measure the longest side available for the furniture.
  • Depth: Check how far the piece can project without narrowing a walkway.
  • Height: Measure below shelves, windows, switches and ceiling features.
  • Clearance: Leave room to open drawers, wardrobe doors and recliners fully.
  • Circulation: Mark the walking route around the piece with removable tape.

For large items, outline the footprint on the floor using painter’s tape or newspaper. This makes it easier to judge whether the scale feels comfortable before delivery.

2. Record the furniture’s true dimensions

Use the dimensions stated on the listing when available, and confirm what each number represents. Furniture measurements are commonly shown as width × depth × height, but the order should never be assumed.

Also check whether removable parts are included in the published dimensions. Sofa legs, table tops, headboards, shelves and wardrobe doors may sometimes be detachable, but do not assume a piece can be dismantled unless that is confirmed for the specific listing.

Small products can still be awkward. For example, the breakfast table and two high stools listing states a table size of 76 × 76 × 115 cm and stools of 40 × 40 × 76 cm. The footprint is compact, but the table’s height and pedestal shape still matter when moving it through a narrow turn.

3. Measure every part of the delivery route

Walk from the building entrance to the intended room and record the smallest measurement at each point.

Building and apartment entrances

  • Measure the clear door opening with the door fully open.
  • Exclude the frame, handle, door closer and security gate from the usable width.
  • Check the height below any overhead closer or decorative frame.
  • Measure the space immediately before and after the doorway for turning.

Lift access

  • Measure the lift-door width and height.
  • Measure the internal cabin width, depth and height.
  • Check whether handrails or protective padding reduce usable space.
  • Confirm the distance opposite the lift doors; a long item may need space to rotate before entering.

Stairs, corridors and landings

  • Record the narrowest corridor width.
  • Measure stair width between the wall and handrail.
  • Check ceiling height above steps and underneath low beams.
  • Measure landings diagonally where furniture must turn.
  • Note fixed shoe cabinets, fire equipment or decorative panels that reduce clearance.

Inside the home

Repeat the doorway check for every room on the route. Pay special attention to entrance halls with sharp 90-degree turns, bedroom corridors, kitchen islands and ceiling lights.

4. Use the diagonal—not only width and height

A rectangular piece may pass through a doorway at an angle even when its face is wider than the opening. However, this depends on its depth, the available ceiling height and the space for rotation on both sides.

For sofas, compare the doorway with the sofa’s depth and back height. For tabletops, wardrobes and headboards, consider the longest diagonal and whether the piece can be safely tilted. If the fit is close, treat it as uncertain rather than guaranteed.

5. Add a sensible safety margin

Measurements taken in different places can vary slightly because of frames, trim, upholstery and uneven walls. A result that matches to the exact centimetre leaves no tolerance for hands, protective wrapping or turning.

As a practical rule, look for several centimetres of spare clearance at the tightest point. Bulky upholstered furniture and complicated turns need more room than flat, rigid pieces.

6. Match the checks to the furniture category

  • Sofas and armchairs: Compare overall width, depth, back height and removable-leg information. Browse sofas and armchairs.
  • Beds: Check the assembled footprint, headboard height and whether the mattress is included. Browse beds.
  • Wardrobes: Measure ceiling height, door-opening clearance and the space needed for assembly or positioning. Browse wardrobes.
  • Dining sets: Measure the table plus usable chair pull-out space, not only the tabletop. Browse dining tables.
  • Sofa beds: Check both closed and fully opened dimensions. Browse sofa beds.

7. Prepare a simple measurement record

Before requesting an item, keep one note containing:

  • Room width, depth and height
  • Furniture dimensions as listed
  • Narrowest entrance and internal doorway
  • Lift door and cabin dimensions
  • Narrowest corridor and stair width
  • Photos of tight corners and landings
  • Any uncertainty about dismantling or included pieces

Label every measurement clearly. “Door: 88 cm” is less useful than “bedroom door clear width with door fully open: 88 cm.”
